Choosing colors and coordinating outfits for a photo session can feel overwhelming and stressful! You may feel like you have no idea where to start. Luckily, it’s not as complicated as it seems!

When you book a session with us, we will send you our detailed client guide packed FULL of tips and tricks for a smooth session, including sections describing color combos, outfit coordination, and places to shop!

We want to offer a few basic tips to you in this blog for making outfit choosing at your next photo session easier! 🙂

The easiest place to start is by choosing what colors you want to wear. If you’re an individual, pick the main color you would like to wear. If you’re a couple or a family, having the woman/mom pick her color and outfit first and basing the rest of the family off of that is usually the easiest way to go!

We recommend wearing earthy, muted tones for your session. If you want to wear red, we recommend wearing maroon or burgundy. Want to wear blue? Wear navy. Want to wear yellow? Wear a pastel yellow. Want to wear pink? Wear blush. Choosing soft and muted tones helps keep the focus on you!!

Layers can add dimension and bring in extra color. Think things like cardigans, vests, jewelry, ties, suspenders, shoes, and hats!

Avoid wearing big and bold patterns, logos, and clothes with tears or paint splatters. We also recommend avoiding matching – compliment each other, but don’t match. Let’s say you’re a couple taking engagement photos: the girl might choose to wear a blush dress with brown heels and the guy might choose to wear a soft blue button down shirt with khakis and brown shoes. If you’re a family getting photos done and you have two little boys, you might put one in a mossy green shirt with gray pants and the other in a navy shirt with khakis. Complimenting outfits and colors will always look better than matching.
