Choosing what to wear for family photos can be hard! As if coordinating the family wasn’t hard enough, trying to choose colors and styles that are flattering and photograph well takes it to another level.
For every client that books with us, we send them a client style guide, detailing what to expect, how to prep, and how to choose what to wear.
Today, I want to share with you some simple tips and tricks to plan outfits for your family photos. The color palettes I’m sharing today is beautiful any time of the year, but feels especially springy to me.
SIMPLE TIPS:
- It’s usually easiest to choose mom’s outfit first and base everyone else’s outfit off hers.
- Choose a color palette, not a single color for everyone to wear.
- For example: choose lilac, moss green, cream, and tan
- Choose earthy, muted colors.
- Give everyone a base color to wear, with pops of other colors from the palette
- Mom has a light lilac dress with cream heels
- Dad has a moss green shirt with light tan pants and brown shoes
- Daughter has a sage green dress and gold shoes
- etc
- Don’t go crazy with patterns – big, chunky patterns are very distracting. If the clothes have a pattern, keep them simple. Don’t choose patterns with a big color contrast. Don’t give everyone a pattern.
- Avoid logos, tears, and paint splatters as these are very distracting in photos.
